Air Handling Units (AHUs) commonly incorporate scroll fans connected to AC motors through a system of belts and pulleys, as shown in the image below. During a recent site survey, we observed an AHU operating continuously (24/7) without any form of speed control.
Following a comprehensive site assessment that involved energy logging, we recommended that the client replace the current setup with an Electronically Commutated (EC) scroll fan. This upgraded fan, operating at the same duty as the original unit, boasts a significantly reduced power consumption of only 1.5 kW, resulting in a remarkable 50% reduction in power usage. An additional advantage of this upgrade is the elimination of the belt, saving both on maintenance costs and valuable time, particularly beneficial for AHUs located in hard-to-reach areas.
Moreover, the newly proposed fan will integrate seamlessly with the Building Management System. We further recommended linking the fan speed to a CO2 sensor, a measure that not only enhances energy efficiency but also contributes to cost savings. This intelligent integration allows for dynamic adjustment of the fan speed based on real-time environmental conditions, ensuring optimal performance while minimising energy consumption.
